Pool Party

This my Article that appeared in the August Edition of The Burb. In case you can't find a Copy near you.

Since The Burb and BigBadSportsDaddy.com's Collective Bargaining Agreement is about to expire and I am about to get locked out of the paper, I have decided to keep this article short and sweet. As unfair as it might be, Marie(The Burb's Publisher) has decided not to share her billions with us poor writers. When I asked for a raise, she told me she wasn't making any money. When I asked to see the books, she refused to open them and suggested I prepare for a lockout! OMG! Another one? Thanks Marie!

On a happier note, it is summertime in Las Colinas and that means pool parties everywhere. For instance, Big Bad Sports Daddy is throwing one on July 29th at Quick Trip Park! Don't miss the biggest, baddest pool party of 2011! Keep clicking on BBSD for details on when and where you can pick up tickets. In case you are planning your own pool party, here are some rules to follow:

1). Must have adult beverages and women in bikinis! Ten dudes sitting around the pool asking "Where are the girls at?"does not equal good times at the cement pond.
2). Must get said women to have Chicken Fights! These always lead to wardrobe malfunctions!
3). If a game of water volleyball breaks out, remember it's just a game Focker.
4). Don't play crappy music. Nothing ruins a pool party faster then Rick Astley or LFO.
5). Invite Larry Stanley to any and all pool parties in Las Colinas! FYI, it's larry@bigbadsportsdaddy.com.

MFFL

Every time I think I am out...you seem to pull me right back in! Yes, you have broken my heart too many times to count, but like a chump I keep coming back for more. You are like a cheating ex-girlfriend that I just can't seem to get away from. You are like a bad slot machine that never pays off. You know how this story will end, but you just don't want to believe it. The "you" I am talking about in this case is the Dallas Mavericks.

Over the years I have invested a lot of my precious time watching Mavs games. My fan-ship goes back to Ro Blackman, D-Harp, and James Donaldson. I was even there for the days of Mike Iuzzolino and Donald Hodge. I remember the 3 J's and being excited about the horrific draft picks made back then (I.E., Samaki Walker, Cherokee Parks, and Loren Meyer). Back in those days the score was different.

Throughout my early youth, I watched The Dallas Mavericks go from really good to really bad. By the time I was a teenager, I learned to just accept the fact that they were going to be terrible. But I kept the hope alive and always had the optimistic attitude of "this year will be different". It took a few years, but change finally came around.

In 2000, Mark Cuban bought the Mavericks, and inserted instant life into what had been a dead franchise. The Dallas Mavericks were now fun! They had cool nicknames like Dirty, Filthy, and Nasty. They had transformed into what us Mavs fans had always wanted them to become...a contender. It took a few more years, but our little Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals for the first time in '06. We thought they were all grows up, and our MVP Dirk was going to bring home the championship trophy. Of course that didn't happen. What happened instead was an epic collapse.

Then in '07, a 60 win #1 seed Dallas Mavericks team gets swept and knocked out in the first round by an 8 seed. In'08, they were out in the first round of the playoffs again. That's when I threw in my proverbial towel. You see, somewhere between 2000 and 2008, I had come to expect the Mavericks to become winners. But then they just kept breaking my heart. All the years of heartache and frustration finally got to me, and yes I did quit watching.

I'll admit even up until the Western Conference finals this year I wasn't sold on them. I casually watched the 1st round and I was just waiting to read the headline "Trailblazers eliminate Mavs". To a lot of Mavs fans' surprise, they made it out of Round 1. What next? The mighty Lakers of LA, that's what. Well, that series didn't take long...the Mavs win again! Were they for real this time? Of course not...or so I had thought!

Those little Mavericks showed us they came to play this year. Then they sucked me right back in to this bad mentally abusive relationship. However; my attitude has changed. As I write this article, the Mavericks just went down 0-1 to the Heat. You know what? I still believe they can win it! If I'm wrong though, it doesn't matter because they have won me back over. Like any relationship you are trying to save, we were just needing a "break". No matter what happens in 2010, I am proud of this team! I don't say it too often, but I love you Dallas Mavericks! No matter how many times you break my heart, I will always come back. I am a true MFFL(Mavs Fan For Life). Always have been, and always will be. Let's go Mavs!

2011 Big Bad NFL Mock Draft

If you listen to the Sports Daddys podcast on BigBadSportsDaddy.com you have already heard my bold guarantee. Yes I will out pick SI.com’s Peter King in this year’s 2011 draft! If you are not familiar with Peter King he is Sports Illustrated's NFL insider. I took the time to read his 2011 NFL Mock Draft while doing my research over Easter weekend. What did I find out? The guy has lost it! Hey went all mad scientist Doc Brown style on us this year. So I will once again (this time in blog form) guarantee I will out pick P.King. Why? Because I can! I am gambling man so if you would like to wager Petey holler! You can catch me on twitter @bigbadlarry.

Thank you for taking time out to read our first ever Big Bad Mock Draft! And Away we go!

1. Carolina Panthers- Nick Fairley-DT- Aburn
The Panthers aren’t ready to give up on Jimmy Clausen just yet. If he is not their future QB Andrew Luck will be here next year. Ron Rivera is a Defense guy and wants to build up that Panthers D with a legit pass rush. It’s not the sexy pick but Fairley is their man
2. Denver Broncos- Marcell Dareus-DT-Alabama
New Coach,New 4-3 System and big run stopper. John Fox another Defense minded coach will select an anchor for that Denver Defense for the next few years.
3.Buffalo Bills- A.J. Green-WR-Georgia
Buffalo needs lots of help. A.J. Green could be a key piece in their O moving forward.
4. Cincinnati Bengals- Von Miller-LB-Texas A&M
Cincinnati feels Carson Palmer will be back. If not they will address the need in Free Agency and hold back and wait for a QB next year. The Jungle Cats were 27th in sacks last year. Miller comes in a gives them a legit pass rusher around the outside.
5. Arizona Cardinals- Patrick Peterson-CB-LSU
At 5 the Cards will be ecstatic to get the most talented player in the draft. Even though the popular opinion and common sense would tell you AZ needs a QB. Expect them to continuing developing young Max Hall and bring in an older mentor type via Free Agency. It’s hard to draft another franchise QB when Nightmares of drafting Matt Leinart still dance in your head

6. Cleveland Browns- Juilo Jones-WR-Alabama
My name is Cleveland Brown and proud to say, Colt will have a big Wide Receiver on draft day. (Fox Animation Domination fans will get that)
7. San Francisco 49ers- Blaine Gabbert-QB-Missiouri
Finally the 1st QB of 2011 is off the big board. Jim Harbaugh will want to develop his guy at QB and not give Alex Smith his 999th chance. Gabbert is smart and has big arm. You would never know this though watching him play at Mizzo though
8. Tennessee Titans-Cam Newton-QB-Auburn
Well it didn’t take long for the 2nd QB to come off the board either. I know Bud Adams loves this guy and would love to have be the signal caller of the future.
9. Dallas Cowboys- Prince Amukamara-CB-Nebrska
A lot of draft guys have the Cowboys going O Line here. Not going to happen. That’s not sexy enough for Jerry! Jerry has never drafted a O Line man in round 1 and he won’t start now. Look for Dallas to take the Prince
10.Washington Redskins-Jake Locker-QB Washington
Washington needs a new QB man and Jake Locker seems to fit the bill. You know little Danny Snyder likes those big name bust almost as much as Jerry Jones.
11. Houston Texans-Da’Quan Bowers-DE-Clemonson
The Texans D was pathetic last year. Especially their secondary. However with the best two corners off the board and no saftey worth taking at 11 look for Houston to shore up the front line. A few weeks ago Da’Quan was the projected #1 pick but a minor knee injury dropped him like he was hot. Houston gambles and picks up a CB in the 2nd or 3rd
12. Minnesota Vikings- Akeem Ayers-LB-UCLA
Yes it is a little high for Ayers but the Vikings need an Outside Linebacker more then anything else. Their 3rd down Defense was worst then their QB play. That says a lot
13. Detroit Lions- Mike Pouncey-G-Florida
With key young triplets in place the lions need some protectors. Look for them to pounce on Pouncey (Rock Me)

14. ST Louis Rams- Mark Ingram-RB Alabama
The Rams have a nice young team but Steven Jackson is always an injury list. Look for them to go RB here to help share his load
15. Miami Dolphins- Mike Leshoure-RB-Illinois
Ronnie Brown is a Free Agent and Ricky Williams is 80 years old. They will be besides them self for missing out on Ingram but will reach here on Leshoure
16.Jacksonville Jaguars- Robert Quinn-DE-North Carolina
The Jags have to improve their pass rush and Quinn is a steal. If he wasn’t suspended last year he would be a top 5 pick. Great value and the Jags fill a need. This pick makes way to much sense
17. New England Patriots- J.J. Watt-DE-Wisconsin
NE pass Defense was 30th in the NFL last year. That won’t cut it. J.J. is the get your lunch pale/ hard working guy that will fight right in there in Bradyland
18. San Diego Super Chargeres- Jonathan Baldwin-WR-Pittsburgh
Another weapon for Rivers? Why not? That offense could be electrifying.
19. New York Giants- Anthony Castonzo-T-Boston College
New York has to get younger on the O-Line. Tom Coughlin has lots of ties to BC. Case and Point
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Aldon Smith- DE-Missouri
Inconsistent pass rush & Couldn't stop the run describes TB’s D last year. I also have it on good authority the Bucs personal department loves this kid. Smith comes in and is an impact player right away.
21. Kansas City Chiefs- Aaron Williams-CB Texas
If KC wants to think about stopping the Chargers they have to get some Corner Help. It’s either Aaron Williams or Jimmy Smith and Williams doesn’t have the “off the field issues” Smith does

22. Indianapolis Colts- DeAndre McDaniel- Safety- Clemonson
I sound like a broken record but here is another team with a bad secondary. There one all pro safety can’t stay healthy. Colts look to add a big playmaker to roam Centerfield
23. Philly Eagles- Gabe Carimi- T- Wisconsin
The Eagles gave up 49 sacks last year and Michael Vick was their QB. That line is bad. Carimi for the save
24. New Orleans Saints-Cameron Heyward-DE-Ohio State
Who Dat? Ironhead JR that’s who! This would be really cool if it happens. Heyward going to the Saints where his daddy made a name for himself. The Saints also need to improve their pass rush.
25. Seattle Seahawks-Tyron Smith-T-USC
They must go O-Line here. Look for Pete McDbag to snag his former Trojan recruit. The only problem is Smith may have to take a pay cut to play in the Pacific Northwest.
26. Baltimore Ravens- Derek Sherrod-T- Mississippi State
Big guard to protect Flacco and open holes for Rice.
27. Atlanta Falcons- Kyle Rudolph-TE-Notre Dame
Tony G’s big replacement!
28. New England Patriots- Justin Houston-LB-Georgia
Pats should add another dangerous pass rusher here.
29. Chicago Bears- Nate Solder-T-Colorado
The Bears gave up more sacks then any team since ‘06. Solder comes in to Buff up their line up(Rock me x2)
30. New York Jets-Torrey Smith-WR-Maryland
All of the Jets Wide Outs are Free Agents except Jerricho Cotchery. Look for them to get younger at the position and add depth via the draft
31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Jimmy Smith-CB-Colorado
He has the size and the speed to be a NFL Shut down corner. The problem is he failed 4 drug test and had some run ins with the law at Colorado. The Steelers are no strangers to handling problem children. Smith to the Steel City.
32. Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers-Phil Taylor-DT-Baylor
From Waco,Texas Green to Green Bay Wisconsin. The Packers need someone to plug the middle and stop the run. Taylor is that guy.

Fantasy Football Advice

Fantasy Football season is here! It’s by far my favorite season. I am not one of those ridiculous people who have 50 different fantasy football teams on every football website known to man. I have one. That’s right one. I play in a 20 team keeper cash league. We are going into our 10th year. I play in one league and one league only because I don’t want my attention diverted from the prize. I keep my mind on the money and the money on my mind.

I was spending a Sunday last year catching the games with my buds and one of the co players started yelling for Frank Gore to score. I thought this was odd since I was playing him and I had Frank the Tank. I had to ask “Why are you wanting Frank to do well? Are you trying to lose this week?” Which he replied “No but I have him 3 other leagues.” 3 other leagues WTF? Ok I have had two teams and even 3 teams but 4? He then informed me that he had 10 teams in 09. All of them were money leagues. That’s a little overboard! How can you stay focused on any team when you have ten to manage?

I have owned two teams in the past. I get conflicted when I am playing a guy with my other team’s players on his team. Does that make sense? I don't like it therefore I do not do it anymore.

Back in 07 I tried to manage 3 teams and I hate to admit it but my ESPN.com team became a dreaded dead team. I am very ashamed. If you are not going to play don’t commit. There is nothing more annoying then not being able to get a hold of other owners for trade offers or you and another team battling it out for first and seeing the team he his playing hasn’t set their line up since week 3! Which happen to be the week you played Mr. Dead Team and lost!

So for you preparing for the 2010 season remember it’s ok to say no. Do you want to play in my fantasy football league with a bunch of guys who think Ben Tate is a new sports bar? NO! Play fantasy football and play it right. Please keep up with your teams and stay active America.

Best of luck to you!

Scattershooting

Scattershooting While wondering whatever happen to Tatu . On the Dawn of the World Cup I can’t help but wonder what happen to my beloved Dallas Sidekicks and their fearless shirtless leader!

Ok Strasburgh is the next big thing! 14k’s and no walks in his first start. Pretty good eh? The Nationals also drafted Bryce Harper this week and really have been dominating the baseball headlines. I am going to go ahead and make the declaration that your Washington Nationals will win the World Series in 2014! That is if The Mayan Calendar is wrong and our world doesn’t end in 2012.

Beware of 3 American league teams that seem ready to make a push. The Mariners, Blue Jays and White Sox all can get hot and surprise some people this summer. The Jays will have the toughest road playing in the most competitive division in baseball. Their young pitching staff has The Eye of the Tiger and looks hungry! They have to hope Adam Lind’s bat comes around and all the other AL EAST teams really wear each other down the stretch but look for them to be in the Wild Card race. Seattle needs a bat! If they can stay within 5 games at the deadline look for them to go get one. The AL West is wide open. The Chi-town Sox have to much talent to be under achieving! Ozzie Guillen will be fired if his team is not in the post season. He will have to motivate the Sox in his own special angry mexican way to get them rolling.

Big 12,Pac 10, Big 10! There is nothing wrong with the Big 12! Leave it be! Get rid of The BCS and let’s set up a playoff system. That should be the real issue in college football right now! Not this team is being recruited by so and so. Everyone just stay put! Two Words for you NCAA Football- Freaking PLAYOFFS!

I guess all eyes in the basketball world are on LeBron. It’s a shame we have a pretty decent final going on right now too. Let me solve this mystery for you. LeBron to The Bulls on July 1. Can we move on to the next topic?

Oh ,ok! So we are out of topics for this week. Look For Courtney's World Cup Blog here on BBSD This Friday! Also Make Sure you check out The John & Eric Show for more sports then the law will allow..
